Ski Bunny Chic: The New Beauty and Style Guide

Winter getaways aren’t always about the tropics, beaches, and bikinis.   Escapes to snowy destinations, mountains, adrenalin-filled skiing, cozy fireplaces, and chalet-chic are just as desirable, and call for a whole different beauty routine, not to mention style update.  Let’s face it – you are there as much for the après ski as for the skiing, and looking good both on and off the piste is crucial and non-negotiable.

Just because practicality dictates that you have to be warm and comfortable to really enjoy yourself, don’t throw style to the wind.  Athletic wear has evolved to be warmer and sleeker than in the past, so no one needs to look sloppy, or puffed out like a Michelin man in a big duvet.  Keeping to a crisp white or sharp black palette allows you to mix and match your ski wardrobe and make a graphic statement on and off the slopes.  Choose leggings and turtlenecks that are meant for winter sports, that hug your curves and are designed using high-tech fabrics, silks and wool blends for ultimate warmth without the bulk.  If you are temped to accessorize with fur, be kind and wear fake fur. The best designers of winter wear now offer amazing fake fur options that are indiscernible from the real thing.  Large metallic reflective ski goggles and eyewear give a chic, futuristic touch.  Bare your skin like the models in fashion editorials at your own risk. Being frozen is not chic.

Speaking of skin, adjusting your beauty routine for colder, drier air, for mountainous elevations, and glaring reflective sunlight is a must.  Start with a hydrating serum or a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid to keep your skin plump with moisture.  Apply your sunscreen liberally and make sure it offers broad spectrum UVA and UVB coverage.  Keep a small tube or stick handy to reapply during the day.  Don’t forget your lips as they show the first signs of being dry and affected by the sun.  Look for a super hydrating lip balm with a high SPF and a touch of color tint and reapply often.  Use a neutral palette for the your eyes, lips and cheeks to set off the bright whites, blacks, and metallic accessories that you are wearing.

While it makes sense to have your hair up or back while you ski, après ski is the perfect time to let your hair down and be sexy and natural.  Leave your hair extensions off while you ski and put your hair into braids under your hat or headband.  When you let the braids out you will have natural waves in two seconds flat.  Add your hair extensions, give your makeup a quick touch up by brushing your brows, use a little highlighter on your cheekbones to set off the rosy, healthy glow you got from skiing, and apply lip color. Nothing says glamorous winter fun like ski bunny chic!

MODEL CRUSH MONDAY - LUCKY BLUE SMITH

Discovered at age ten and signed to Next Models at age 12, Utah-native Lucky Blue Smith and his three sisters have taken the fashion industry by storm, famously being photographed together by Hedi Slimane for Vogue Homme Japan when Lucky was only twelve years old.  How many teens have had such an illustrious career by 18 years old that they have enough life experiences to write their autobiography?  “Stay Golden” gives readers the story of Lucky’s upbringing, his family, being homeschooled, travels, explosion onto the fashion world scene, and his surf-rock band “The Atomics” with his three sisters.

With 2.6 million followers on Instagram, countless Pinterest pages dedicated to him, Lucky’s face is everywhere, from magazine covers and editorials, to fashion runways, to campaigns, to music, which is in fact Lucky’s passion.  No doubt acting opportunities are on the horizon as well.

Lucky is now ranked the top male model in the fashion world, appearing in campaigns for Tom Ford, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Phillip Plein, Moncler, and L’Oreal, and on the covers of Vogue, GQ, Numero, i-D, W, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar amongst others.  We can’t get enough of those steely blue eyes that reminds us of James Dean and a young Paul Newman, and the world is watching to see what Lucky will do next – modeling appears to be just the tip of the iceberg. Hair Jewelry for the Ultimate Holiday Sparkle!

If ever there was a season to rock a tiara or to bedazzle your hair, it is the holiday season.  Dreaming of a prima ballerina moment wearing a pearled headband, or feeling like an exotic princess? Add some sparking embellishment and this is holiday hair done WAY better!

Many designers from Chanel to Dolce et Gabana, Alexander McQueen and Rodarte, have all tapped into the idea of fantasy hair, giving us another focal point to adorn, oftentimes right along with jeweled chokers AND chandelier earrings.  No need to go all out if you are a little less bold, though, as there are smaller pieces like hair brooches that are just as enchanting.

If you love nothing more than the full on eye-catching twinkle of multiple pieces and statement tiaras then now is your time to shine.  Dolce et Gabana’s headpieces go all out in Italian style that channels the adornments on religious statuary, and noble family heirlooms worn all at once for maximum impact.

The East-Indian-inspired pieces at Chanel’s Pre Fall 2012 runway show followed center parts of the model’s hair and trickled down onto their foreheads with pearls and rhinestones set into metallic gold and silvers.  This concept could work for a boho bride who wantes something less traditional than the classic pearled headband.

Some of the hair embellishments have a 1920’s style to them, which feels like pure decadence during prohibition – oh la la!

An inexpensive and easy to purchase hair accessory can be found at Hidden Crown and attaches with the same clips used in temporary clip in extensions called their Crown Jewels. For $20 you get a very regal look! Here is the link to purchase : Hidden Crown Jewels

Prepare for lots of attention in these sparklers and go right ahead and have your Dutchess Kate moment! You know you want to!
