Traction Alopecia - Hair loss Caused by Extensions and How to Repair.

Traction Alopecia is more common than you think and within your control to prevent. Literally it is caused from constant tension, and pulling on fragile hair follicles. Women who wear hair extensions are at the highest risk of developing this condition, but the good news is that you can recover from traction alopecia if you act immediately!

When extensions are glued, bonded, taped or sewn in to your hair, too much weight is placed on the hair follicles and can cause damage to them. Breakage occurs as hair is "lost" and literally breaks off the hair it is attached to. Also removal of hair extensions or new placement of the extensions for maintenance, requires chemical solvents for removal that are severely damaging. Even that gentle picking off can cause damage.   It is the pulling "traction" that causes traction alopecia and hair loss. If you detect this early you can repair the damage.

Hair follicles are very fragile and just like over plucking your eyebrows, once you damage a hair follicle it can forever stop producing a hair. We are born with a certain number of hair follicles at birth. There is nothing that can stimulate or grow a NEW hair follicle. You get what you get so to speak, so you must be gentle and take care of them.

If you are an extension wearer and notice your hair is thinning, or falling out more than normal in areas where extension are, then it is time to rethink your hair choices. Because hair extensions are helping your hair appear fuller this may go on for some time before you notice.

First you need to remove the extension method that you are using. If you can't bear the thought of giving up your hair there is a design option that does not cause damage that you might consider, Hidden Crown Hair Extensions - this temporary extension design is a whole head of hair on a single invisible thin filament - it has no clips, no glue and can help you still have luscious hair while you recover.

Here are other tips to reduce your recovery time for traction alopecia:

  • Stop using any chemicals in your hair - hair dye or bleach
  • Air dry your hair - no Heat
  • Wash with restorative shampoos sulfate-free
  • Avoid harsh hair styles that pull tightly or use of elastic rubber bands

Finally, make sure you are nourishing your hair follicles from the inside out. Your diet should contain omega 3 fatty acids, lean protein, fruits and vegetables along with drinking plenty of water!

Please comment below if you have experienced this problem and the time it took for recovery, or any helpful tips for others facing this unexpected condition.

Clip In Hair Extensions What you MUST read Before Buying ... a bit of a scam!

Clip in Hair Extensions - Weighing in with some facts you might not know.

Clip in hair extensions have become an easy, no-brainer way to add length and volume to your hair at home. However, buyer beware! When a clip-in hair extension company tells you that you are buying 120 grams of hair they are usually adding in the weight of those darn metal clips! And there are a lot of them in a set of extensions. Never mind the risk of setting off metal detectors at the airport. One well-known brand sells a starter set like this below with 16 metal clips ... which weigh in at 33 grams. So do the math:

120 gram set of clip in extensions
minus
33 grams of clip weight

Leaving only 87 grams of hair.

For an easier alternative than clip in extensions with NO DAMAGE to your own hair choose Hidden Crown Hair Extensions. 140 grams of real Human Hair on a weightless wire, affordable priced that you can put on in less than a minute. Get yours here www.hiddencrown.com

Mindy Kaling Outs Hollywood's use of Hair Extensions !

Mindy Kaling has a new book out WHY NOT ME ? and I have to give her a Big shout out for talking about the truth of looking gorgeous, especially her exposure of how prevalent Hair Extensions are in her industry.

Mindy says, " The real trick to having gorgeous hair is quantity! Piles of thick, cascading My Little Pony - style hair signifies youth."

She goes on to reveal that "everyone uses hair extensions, and I mean everyone. The stenographer who doesn't speak in that judge show you watch. The Long Island Medium. Clooney. EVERYBODY on the Today Show... the entire family getting a new house on Extreme Home Makeover, including the kids. Charlie Rose. The obese woman on My 600 lb Life."

You might remember in my past postings seeing the not so secret tables and tables of hair extensions that is used in those  Victoria Secret Runway Shows, in order to achieve supermodel status.

Now you know the WHAT: Hair Extensions ... but here is where I can help you... clip in extensions are only great if you have professional installation and don't need to wear them very long. The reason? Those clips are metal, heavy and can be damaging to your hair and weigh a ton! One full set of clip in extensions has about 20 clips that are dug into your scalp and adding weight to your head in addition to the added hair.

The solution is so  simple ... Hair on a wire that takes a minute to put on yourself, with no clips, no glue and no damage to your own hair. They are called Hidden Crown Hair Extensions and they truly are the Easiest Extension Ever!
1. Place them on  your Head.
2. Pull your hair over to hide the invisible wire.
3. That's it! The gravity of your own hair holds the extension in place!

Halo Hair Extensions - Comparison REVIEW: Halo UK, Halo Crown, Halo Couture

Halo Couture vs Halo Crown vs Halo Hair Extensions (UK)

In a world of sinners, the Gods of locks, have given us the answer to all of our hairy prayers ...halo shaped hair. The easiest extension ever to use, taking less than a minute to put on without any clips to hide, messy glue or damage to your own hair. To see how easy it is check out my post about Kelly Ripa's fake hair on a wire {Here}

But the question remains - which halo design is most awe inspiring of all? To find out I ordered all three and here's what I found.

THE PRICE
Halo Couture is by far the most expensive $375-600 for their 16 inch extensions (100 grams of hair) which are sold primarily in salons. Halo Crown, in comparison is only $225 and 40% more hair (140 grams). Halo from the UK offers a deluxe 16 inch Halo of 140 grams for $259.99, but it is only 9-10 inches in width offering only hair in back USD, plus it ships from England.

Difference in width

THE HAIR
All three have equally great hair, similar texture, silky and luxurious, but only Halo Couture and Halo Crown are laced backed. The Halo from the UK reportedly can be itchy and bulky with a single hard seam at the top holding all the hair together.

Let's face it, the reason we are looking for an extension is because we want extra hair, so it makes sense to buy the halo that has the most hair. HaloCrown's version wins! weighing in at 140 grams, which is almost 40 % more hair than either Halo Couture or the regular (non-deluxe) UK Halo.

Halo Crown width of hair is 12.5 to 13 inches of hair that goes ear to ear. HaloCouture is 11.5 to 12 inches wide. The Halo Hair Extension from the UK is only 9-10 inches across. I prefer the wider halo design because is gives me volume on the sides too like a whole set of extensions, not just in the back of my head.

HALO CROWN - PUTTING IT ON
Here are some before and after shots of me wearing the 16 inch Halo Crown, that I had cut to 14 inch length and styled - the uncut 16 inch Halo Crown hits at my bra strap and I didn't want it quite that long.

As the old beauty queen within me would say,
"Love your hair, hope you win!"
