Model Crush Monday – Frederikke Sofie

Being compared to Greek goddess Aphrodite and having a face right out of a Boticelli painting has done wonders for Frederikke Sofie’s career trajectory, taking her from fresh-faced teen in her homeland of Denmark, to the top runways and campaigns throughout the fashion industry.

There is no mistaking that main of pre-Raphaelite hair and that patrician face, and while a tall, lithe, classic beauty can always find a place in the modeling world, Frederikke has an edge and a modernity to her that have designers and brands clamoring for her.

Appearing in campaigns for Hugo Boss, Chloe, Zara, and MIssoni and being the new face of Dior Beauty places Frederikke at the top of list of up and coming models in model rankings.

Having a standout personal style has made Frederikke a favorite street style star.  She loves wearing men’s pants and leather shoes, which she claims are far more comfortable than sneakers anyway, which she pairs with classic, boxy shirts and sweaters giving her ultra-feminine appearance a tomboy charm.   You know you are on people’s radar when designers start appropriating elements of your personal style into their collections

Making her edgy street-cred style even more unique is her love of vintage eyeglasses and sunglasses.  She is often photographed wearing wire-framed, oversized aviators, or 70’s style round frames, and has had such an impact that she has started her own trend that is showing up in editorials and campaigns alike.  Classic geek-chic as worn by this beauty is so off that it’s on.

Model Crush Monday – Grace Hartzel

Once in a very blue moon a model comes along that sparks the imagination of designers, editors and photographers, with her ability to transform herself and to become different characters to suit each project.  American beauty Grace Hartzel is one of the break out models of the last year with her large, wide-set eyes and willowy body, going from covers to campaigns without batting an eyelash.

At merely twenty years old, Indiana native Grace began modeling when she was scouted in 2011, quickly making the leap from a new face to a standout runway star in short order, quickly racking up runway shows, covers, and campaigns, around the world.

Grace has loved transforming herself with style and makeup since she was a child, initially planning on an acting career before modeling became an option, so the transition to modeling was an easy one for her, going from goth, to ultra-feminine, to sixties mod, to 90's grunge, all while looking like the coolest girl that everyone wants to hang with.

Her chameleon-like ability and her willingness to hide her own identity in becoming a character make her a dream model for photographers and editors.  Having a great awareness of movement and instinctually knowing what the camera is seeing gives her an edge over other models who are bound by their look and brand.

Acting is definitely in the cards, as still photography is proving to be a training ground for Grace who recently shot the new commercial video for Salvatore Ferragamo’s fragrance Signorina Misteriosa and loved every second of it.  Such an animated, imaginative model should surely make the jump from printed pages to the big screen.  No doubt Grace will make it look easy.

Model Crush Monday - Supermodel Joan Smalls

You can’t bring up the subject of diversity in modeling and not mention stunning Puerto Rican beauty Joan Smalls.  Born to a black and West Indian father and Latina mother, Joan is an incredible ethnic mix of both, and her entry into the world of fashion was well timed even if she didn’t intend it that way. When she first appeared on the modeling scene a decade ago the industry was beginning to be more receptive to exotic models and her career has set milestones for every ethnic model since.  Joan was the first Latin model to front campaigns for Estee Lauder, an achievement that resonates to this day.

Entering and losing a modeling contest as a teen, followed by a meeting with a New York agent who told her to straighten her teeth, was not enough to deter Joan from following her dreams of a modeling career.  She spent a year and a half in braces while earning a degree in psychology, and promptly left for NYC where she became successful as a commercial model.  After an agency switch to IMG she realized that her ambitions went far beyond commercial work  and she reinvented herself as an editorial model, working for the biggest names in the industry and covering Vogue and many other magazines around the world.

Campaigns for Chanel, Burberry, Calvin Klein, Versace, Dior, David Yurman and more followed, along with a starring role for Victoria’s Secret for both their catalogues and runway shows, making her a household name and one of the most bankable models of the decade.

At age 28, Joan is still going strong as she continues to consistently dominate the business.  It’s no small feat that she has flung wide open the doors for other ethnic beauties who have come after her, a fact of which she is well aware.  A model with a voice, an education, a unique look, a strong work ethic, and heart:  if that doesn’t define a supermodel, nothing does.

Model Crush Monday - Supermodel Lily Aldridge

It is a true sign of the times when the fashion industry finally comes to realize that models who are past the teen years are every bit in their prime as their younger counterparts.  Case In point:  Lily Aldridge, who goes from strength to strength and looks even more stunning now than she ever has in her 17 year career.

Even sustaining such a long career is exceptional in an industry that churns up and spits out models at such a rapid rate that we barely get to know a model before she is replaced by a newer face.  31 year old Lily has hit a new stride fronting several major international campaigns for Spring 2017 – open any major fashion magazine and Lily appears on page after page, dominating in a way other models can only hope.

Lily comes from a family completely immersed in the art and photography industries and came to modeling naturally.   Her mother, Laura Lyons was a famous Playboy Playmate of the Month, her half brother is fashion photographer Miles Aldridge, her half sister Saffron and sister Ruby both model, and her father is an artist.  Needless to say, a strong sense of self, beauty, and art are a wonderful education for a new model and by age sixteen Lily was appearing in campaigns for Abercrombie and Fitch.  By age 17 she appeared on the cover of Vogue Spain.

Appearing in Victoria’s Secret for eight years, nearly all of them as an Angel, has cemented Lily as a swimwear and lingerie model, leading to her cover of Sport’s Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 2014.  But the trademark of a supermodel is to be able to straddle both the fashion and commercial sides of the business, balancing a career between high end luxury brands, fashion magazines, and high street brands such as GAP, H&M, and Tommy Hilfiger, all of which Lily has worked for throughout the past seventeen years.

Womanly elegance with a knockout figure and exotic beauty makes Lily a unique in a crowded industry.  Some models get better – and better- with age.  Lily Aldridge proves it.
